Santa Paula's history with
U.S. Presidents and presidential candidates does not begin with Senator Arnold
Vinick.
On April 25, 1891 (or there
is one report that it was April 24, 1891), President Benjamin Harrison came
to Santa Paula in a special four car train. He reached Santa Paula about 2:30
PM where a large and enthusiastic crowd appeared at the depot. Samples of the
county's beans were presented and also a miniature oil rig executed in various
colored roses. The President said a few words and the train was off to Ventura.
President William McKinley
was the second President to visit Santa Paula on May 10, 1901. President
McKinley's special eight car train stopped for 10 minutes in Santa Paula. The President
spoke from the rear platform to a crowd of three thousand. The depot was decorated
and an archway was covered with flowers and the word WELCOME.
Santa Paula looks forward
to welcoming its third President, Senator Arnold Vinick.
